Australian citizens
Australian citizens travelling on an Australian passport generally do not need an NZeTA or a visa before travel. They must still meet character and entry requirements.
Australian permanent residents
If you are an Australian permanent resident travelling on another passport, you will normally need an NZeTA before travel unless you already have a valid New Zealand visa.
- Hold a current Australian Permanent Resident Visa or Australian Resident Return Visa.
- Have travel conditions that let you return to Australia.
- Carry printed evidence of Australian permanent residence.
- Meet the character requirements for an Australian Resident Visa.
- Complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration before entry.
If requirements are met, you may be granted an Australian Resident Visa on arrival. Rules around travel conditions and maintaining New Zealand residence can be complex; confirm the official guidance for your plans.
